Les Capucines Review: Dependable Parisian Dining

For our last night in Paris, we wanted a relaxed, typically Parisian restaurant. Somewhere that felt genuinely local on a Sunday evening, with a solid menu, good service, crisp white tablecloths, and proper people-watching.

As dusk fell across the city, we came across Les Capucines while wandering along the boulevard. With tables set along the pavement and a welcome glow from inside, it offered exactly what we were after.

Grand Boulevard Setting Near Opéra

Positioned at 39 Boulevard des Capucines along the Grands Boulevards, the brasserie sits between Place de l'Opéra and Place de la Madeleine. It stands almost directly opposite the Olympia music hall, a three-minute walk west of Palais Garnier and roughly a ten-minute walk from our base at the Hôtel de la Place Madeleine.

The brasserie operates across two levels of a classic Haussmannian stone building dating back to around 1870. Upstairs, large windows overlook the boulevard, whilst the ground floor opens directly out to the pavement. It runs continuous service (service continu) from 08:00 until 00:30 seven days a week, taking in morning coffees, lunches, and late dinners for crowds leaving the surrounding theatres.

Dining Outside Under the Red Awning

We chose to sit outside (à l'extérieur) beneath the broad red awning and heat lamps as evening set in. The tables were set close together, yet spaced far enough apart to maintain privacy whilst retaining the natural buzz of the street.

The pavement position provided excellent people-watching along Boulevard des Capucines, with spectators filtering back through the centre after watching the final stage of the Tour de France earlier in the afternoon. From our seats, the warm, wood-panelled interior looked inviting, and somewhere we’ll happy sit cooler evenings.

The pavement terrace works just as well for an unhurried dinner for two as it does for a solitary coffee or family supper, with solo diners looked after with the same attentive care as larger parties.

What to Wear and Booking Ahead

This is an easygoing, relaxed brasserie where you set your own pace. There is no rigid dress code: you can dress up for the evening or arrive comfortably in casual daytime street clothes without feeling out of place.

We had not booked in advance and simply walked in off the street, getting a prime outdoor table without delay. While reservations are available, having the flexibility to wander in for a spontaneous dinner is part of what makes it such a dependable address.

Fresh Produce and Maître-Restaurateur Standards

Les Capucines holds the official French title of Maître-Restaurateur. This government certification requires kitchens to prepare dishes on site (fait maison) using fresh seasonal produce from recognised suppliers, rather than relying on industrial pre-assembled food.

The menu is a dependable Parisian line-up with plenty of fresh dishes, catering equally well to meat eaters and vegetarians. Service throughout was swift, polite, and very friendly.

Outstanding Food and a Memorable Bottle

Because it was our final dinner of the trip, we decided to order a special bottle of wine: a Château Poesia 2019, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The team served it with wonderful ceremony. Priced at just over €100, it was worth every drop; deep, elegant, and perfectly matched to the food.

Across three courses each, the food was excellent. We finished by sharing desserts, including a hazelnut praline dome with light cream and a crisp caramel tuile.

The total bill came to less than €250 for two people, covering three courses each, that standout bottle of wine, and well-deserved service. For central Paris along the Grands Boulevards, we felt it was one of the best meals we had on this latest trip.

Not to Be Confused with Le Grand Café Capucines

A quick practical distinction: do not confuse Les Capucines (at number 39) with Le Grand Café Capucines, located further east along the same street at 4 Boulevard des Capucines.

While Le Grand Café Capucines is an Art Nouveau seafood institution dating from 1875, Les Capucines (this one) at number 39 is an independent, classic neighbourhood-style brasserie focused on seasonal dishes and continuous all-day dining. Both have their place, but they are entirely separate establishments.

Another Dependable Paris Table to Keep

Finding an independent brasserie that gets the fundamentals right on a Sunday night can be a challenge in central Paris. Les Capucines delivered on every front. It is firmly on our list of dependable Parisian restaurants, and we look forward to returning on our next visit.
