Luxury Shopping in Berlin: The Ku’damm, KaDeWe, and Where to Find Chanel

When exploring a new European capital, finding the high-end retail district usually starts with a simple rule of thumb: find out where Chanel is planted. Once you locate the double-Cs, the rest of the luxury ecosystem, from Hermès and Louis Vuitton to standalone flagships like Prada and Zegna, is never far behind.

While Mitte has its historic charm, with a few luxury shops scattered around Hotel de Rome, Berlin’s main luxury retail district sits out west, anchored by the grand boulevard of the Kurfürstendamm (the Ku’damm) and its two retail spots.

Ku’damm: The Champs-Élysées of Berlin

Often styled as Berlin’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, the upper, western stretch of the Ku’damm is a sweeping, tree-lined avenue designed for slow, deliberate window-shopping. Walking beneath the dappled shade of the mature roadside plane trees past classic limestone facades and sleek advertising pillars gives the district an air of unhurried elegance. It stands in direct contrast to a compact dash down a single narrow street like London's New Bond Street, nor does it have the steady incline of Les Champs. Here, the wide stone pavements and grand architecture offer time and space, away from the growing crowds seen in other cities.

Department Stores vs Luxury Boutiques - the two ends of the Ku’Damm

When planning your attack, it helps to understand that the district operates as a linear walk between two distinct poles, much like walking the length of Oxford Street down to Bond Street.

The Luxury Department Store The KaDeWe sits at the at the southern end of the Ku’Damm. Think of it as Berlin's direct equivalent to London's Selfridges or Paris's Galeries Lafayette, with the same range of international brands. It is a massive, legendary department store that serves as a destination in its own right. Opened in 1907 by creator Adolf Jandorf, it was built specifically to rival those grand European emporiums.

Getting there is straightforward—if you set an Uber to KaDeWe, any local driver will drop you at the front entrance.

However, the immediate surroundings here have a busier, busier commercial energy. To find those wide, tree-lined pavements and classic limestone facades you can hop in an uber, or take an easy 20 minute meander past the Hard Rock Café before the pavements widen and the traffic subsides.

Where to Find Luxury Boutiques in Berlin

To find the luxury bouqitues, and not the beauty counters or department store concessions head to Chanel where most of the boutiques are clustered.

Where to Stop for Lunch: Pizza and Coffee Along the Way

A proper slow-travel afternoon of luxury window-shopping requires a pause to refuel. Instead of rushing back into a hotel dining room, do as we did and slip off the main avenue to find a quiet neighbourhood spot.

We stopped for a great lunch outside in the sunshine at Restaurant Paul GmbH on Kurfürstendamm 51. It was our chance to regroup and refresh before round two of retail therapy.

Practical Guide: How to Get to the Kurfürstendamm

The primary luxury retail district stretches between KaDeWe (Tauentzienstraße 21–24, 10789 Berlin) and the upper Kurfürstendamm flagships around number 188.

Getting There: Take the U-Bahn (U1 or U9) to Zoologischer Garten to drop close to KaDeWe, then wander up the boulevard. Alternatively, catch the Bus (specifically Bus 100 or Bus 245 from central Mitte) to get right near the upper fashion stretch and Chanel.
